Graeme Victor’s journey is one of corporate devotion AND entrepreneurial endeavour as he has led some of the top brands in South Africa, and then gone on to establish and run his own companies.
In today’s Future CEOs Podcast Episode, we sit with this iconic businessman and learn all we can as he shares the insights and wisdom he has gained over a career filled with Chief Executive titles and responsibilities.
Although Graeme shared with me that he was actually that student…the one that could barely pass Standard 5 (Grade 7). This didn’t stop him from achieving in this area though – once he recognised the need for formal education he would go on to equip himself with a B.SC(Eng)(Cum Laude) from Wits, a M.Sc (Stanford), M.Eng(Stanford), B.Compt Hons(Unisa), and is a qualified and registered Charted Accountant(SA).
Organisations he as led and offices he as filled include:
- Director & Partner: Kessel Feinstein
- Chief Executive: Computicket (Pty) Ltd.
- Chief Executive: Vodac (Pty) Ltd.
- Managing Director: Vodacom Group Ltd.
- Chief Executive: Tiscali (Pty) Ltd. t/a World Online
- Current – Chief Executive: Du Pont Telecom (Pty) Ltd.
He also holds a number of non-executive board positions.
Graeme shared with me that he has a passion for people, and has mentored and groomed a number of young individuals from entry level positions into top senior management roles, throughout his career.
It was a truly memorable conversation with a humble and wise leader.
In this episode you will learn:
- The difference between a CEO that leads a large corporation, and the CEO that starts his or her own business
- What to do when you’re “just not feeling it anymore”
- The problem with focusing on turnover as a KPI
- And a load of other advice, insights, and lessons
Quotable quotes from the episode by Graeme:
“You’ve got to have guts, and you’ve got to take on risk.”
“A CEO who doesn’t make decisions, is a failure…you might be right, or you might be wrong, but you’ve got to make decisions.”
“You mustn’t fear what you don’t know, you mustn’t stand back and watch. You must get involved, take ownership, and any problem you have you must confront.”
“Don’t worry about turnover, worry about cashflow…it’s the money in the bank that determines the success of your business…turnover is vanity.”
“You shouldn’t be driven by a title, you should be driven by passion.”
