This week, Hlubi and Gareth have the pleasure of sitting with Alan Knott-Craig Jr.: Former CEO of Mxit, Africa’s biggest social network. Former CEO of iBurst which he led from 2006 to 2009, helping to build one of South Africa’s largest wireless broadband networks. Alan is also the Founder World of Avatar, an investment house for mobile apps for Africa. He founded Ever Africa: which invests in eCommerce, games, education, eBooks and telecoms. In fact, between 2003 and 2013 Alan co-founded and/or funded 17 companies in the TMT sector in Africa. And he joins us in studio as the current CEO of Project Isizwe, another company he has founded which facilitates the roll-out of free Wi-Fi networks across Africa, funded by municipalities.
And he is also an author and African advocate: In April 2008 Alan published Don’t Panic, a best-selling book aimed at persuading South Africans to stay in the country. In 2009 named as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. In 2012, co-authored Mobinomics, the story of Mxit, the biggest social network to come from Africa. In 2014 published Really, Don’t Panic and Moenie Stres Nie, a follow up the 2008 edition of Don’t Panic.
